Soccer On Grant Field

Soccer is one of the most popular sports at Tecumseh. Many of the campers at Tecumseh are avid travel team and school team players in the fall. The soccer staff has been filled with many high level players and coaches over the years.

Tecumseh regularly schedules soccer games against local camps and often has in-house games on a regular basis. Tecumseh has a large 110 x 70 yard soccer field as well as a smaller 70 x 55 yard field for the younger age groups. Tecumseh also has a 30 by 15 foot backboard behind the soccer field where players can work on their skills during their free time.

Since 1990, the soccer program at Tecumseh has been run by Sibby Browne. Sibby is an Olympic Development Program coach and high level club coach in New Mexico. Sibby was also the head coach for the West Nottingham Academy (Maryland) boys varsity program. He was captain and four year player at The University of Pennsylvania. Before that, he was an All-State Selection at Conestoga High School where he was captain of the 1988 Pennsylvania State Champions

Over the years the Tecumseh soccer staff has had many high level soccer people, including:

  • Biff Sturla - head coach for the Harriton High School Boys Varsity and President of Lower Merion Soccer Club. Biff has coached club soccer for 25 years and has won over a dozen state championships. His FC Delco Hammerheads team were national finalists in 2006.

In 1997, Tecumseh hosted the Philadelphia Freedom Professional Soccer team (of the USISL) for two days after they played the New Hampshire Phantoms. The Freedom put on several clinics for the soccer players at Tecumseh and finished off with an informal scrimmage against some of the Tecumseh campers. The visit to Tecumseh by the Freedom was arranged by their General Manager, Biff Sturla who was a camper and counselor at Tecumseh for 12 years.
